I often find that women are a little more willing to get outside help with their marriage problems than men. I would have to conclude that many men are just too proud to ask another person for help, however, I am a firm believer that having an ability to ask others for help is not a weakness, but a strength. Why? The scriptures point out that pride is a weakness, whereas, humility is always a strength in the sight of God.

Nevertheless, let me list a few reasons in this article as to why it is important for couples to seek outside help when they are going through marital difficulties:

1. Husbands and wives are just entirely too emotionally involved with their situation to know which way to turn first. It is a common occurrence to have couples call my coaching center that have been trying to solve their marriage problems on their own for years, but to no avail. Let me also add, that, to God be the glory, it is also a common occurrence for these very same couples to see much of the tension that has been present in their marriage relationship to disappear after just a few sessions.

2. Husbands and wives that are suffering from marriage problems have little trust in one another, therefore, they tend to make really bad couples counselors or marriage coaches of one another. I often say that couples in crisis mode often have few resources in their bank of account of credibility with one another. This is why, from my vantage point, it is important to seek the advice of someone that has automatic credibility and authority in the other person's eyes.

3. Many couples have great motives, but lousy methods when it comes to solving their marriage problems. I like to say that mere desire alone will not be enough. Couples should seek out a specialist that thinks, writes, and deals with the issue of marriage problems on a day to day basis.

4. Proverbs 11:14 says:

"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety."
